Witness the lonely fruitcake. For years, taking the “bundt” of endless, tasteless comments as to its composition and age. Standing rock hard against the ravages of time, it seeks eternal life as it is passed from host to unsuspecting host.

Not so this particular cake of fruit, at this particular party. Destined to be devoured, this “candied creation” was delivered earlier by “visitors” inexplicably whisked away before they could warn the guests of its mighty potential: its ability to awaken one’s imagination, to create from the familiar an incredible mindscape of thoughts unbound.

You are about to embark on an unexpected journey; a journey of sound and of the mind to another sensation.
A sensation we call... The Altared Zone.

O Christmas Tree

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
Not only green when summer’s here,
but also when ‘tis cold and drear
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with gaeity
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with gaeity
On Christmas day you stand so tall
affording joy to one and all
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree
You fill all hearts with –

Santa Claus is Coming To Town
J. Fred Coots/Haven Gillespie
EMI Feist Catalog, Inc.

You better be good, you better not cry, better not pout,
I’m telling you why – Santa Claus is coming to town
I’m making a list, and checking it twice,
I’m going to find out who’s naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you’re sleeping,
he knows when you’re awake,
he knows if you’ve been bad or good,
so be good for goodness sake.
You better be good, you better not cry,
better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

Silver Bells
Ray Evans/Jay Livingston
Paramount Music Corp.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style
In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing,
meeting smile after smile
and on every street corner you hear
Silver Bells, Silver Bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day
Strings of streelights, even stoplights
blink of bright red and green,
as the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow cruch, see the kids bunch,
this is Santa’s big scene
and above all this bustle you hear

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Johnny Marks
St. Nicholas Music

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose
and if you ever saw it you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names,
they never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas eve Santa came to say,
"Rudolph, with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then how the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history."

Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer
Randy Brooks, 1977
Elmo Publishing/Kris Publishing Co.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas Eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me an' Grandpa, we believe.
She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go.
But she forgot her medication,
And she staggered out the door into the snow.
When we found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack
She had hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminating Claus marks on her back.
Now we're all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been taking this so well.
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel.
It's not Christmas without Grandma,
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?
Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig
And the blue and silver candles,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.
I've warned all my friends and neighbours,
Better watch out for yourselves.
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
We twa hae run aboot the braes And pu'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot, Sin' auld lang syne.
Sin' auld lang syne, my dear, Sin' auld lang syne,
We've wandered mony a weary foot, Sin' auld ang syne.
We twa hae sported i' the burn, From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.
Sin' auld lang syne, my dear, Sin' auld lang syne.
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.
And ther's a hand, my trusty friend, And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne,
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne.

Can it be that within each of us lies a long-dormant ability to simultaneously laugh and cry; to share one’s soul with another, and to once again experience the deeper meaning of the holidays?

To those at this particular holiday gathering, the answer may never truly be known. For whether their heavenly inspiration came from within, or was brought about by the fruity offerings of unknown travelers, this much is indeed certain: The fruitcake is out of the box and forever into the bowels of mankind. It cannot, will never again be, relegated to the furthermost corner in the pantry of our collective mind.

Joy to the entire world, one and all, for we have just taken a cosmic sleigh ride to...
The Altared Zone.
